China's momentum sets off again! Jinshenghua's three locomotives depart for Africa, boosting Liberia's iron ore transportation upgrade.
Release time:2025-06-22
Tianjin Port, June 22, 2025. Today, accompanied by the roar of port machinery, three newly refurbished locomotives from Wuhan Jinhuasheng Railway Locomotive Co., Ltd. were successfully loaded onto a ship at Tianjin Port. They will set sail tomorrow (June 23), embarking on a maritime journey that will take them across the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans—travelling for more than 60 days in total. The vessels are expected to arrive in early September at the Freeport of Monrovia in Liberia, a West African nation. This ambitious voyage carries the vital mission of enhancing the transportation capacity of Liberia’s key economic artery: the Bong Mines Railway.

The reinforcement with these three locomotives is a crucial step taken by Wuhan Jinhuasheng to ensure the resumption of operations and enhanced transport capacity on the Bangkuang Railway this September. Since February of this year, the company's technical team has meticulously inspected, maintained, and repainted the locomotives, restoring both their performance and appearance to like-new condition. Once put into service, these upgraded locomotives will significantly boost the railway's traction capabilities, firmly supporting the annual goal of reliably transporting 1.5 million tons of iron concentrate—valued at up to US$165 million.

The Liberia Bong Mine Railway is the lifeline of Liberia’s economy, connecting the Bong Mine to the Port of Monrovia. Built by Germany in the 1950s, this aging railway has long been paralyzed due to severe overuse—its steel bridges are corroded, equipment has become obsolete, and sleepers have rotted beyond repair.

Facing daunting challenges, Jinhuasheng rose to the occasion. The company established an overseas task force and meticulously crafted a comprehensive operational recovery plan, strictly adhering to China's railway standards. Despite the severe scarcity of daily living and production resources, the team successfully completed critical tasks—including locomotive repairs, rebuilding the train operation system, restoring port switches and bridges, and undertaking full-line renovations—within just six months, ensuring the smooth flow of this vital transportation artery.

This cross-ocean deployment of three new locomotives marks a solid step forward in Wuhan Jinhuasheng’s commitment to "enhancing transport capacity and ensuring reliable logistics," while also vividly demonstrating how Chinese technology, Chinese standards, and Chinese equipment continue to support Africa’s infrastructure development and deepen international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. With this fresh boost of power, the Bong Mine Railway will now serve as an even stronger engine propelling Liberia’s mineral resource development and economic growth.
